李白 贈汪倫 translation: Zeng Wanglun, by Li Bai

This is a translation and annotation of the poem 《贈汪倫》 by the Chinese poet 李白 (Lǐ Bái). Note that this translation is very much in beta until we’ve discussed it in class and I’ve made the appropriate edits here. Please do point out any issues in the comments at the end of the page.

贈汪倫 Zèng Wānglún [Zeng] [Wang] [Lun] Zeng Wanglun

李白乘舟將欲行, Lǐ Bái chéng zhōu jiāngyù xíng, [Li] [Bai] [mount] [boat] [going to] [want] [go] Li Bai mounts the boat and is about to leave,

忽聞岸上踏歌聲。 hū wén ànshàng tàgē shēng. [suddenly] [hear] [shore] [on] [stamp] [song] [sound] when he suddenly hears on the shore the sound of song and dance.

桃花潭水深千尺, Táohuā Tán shuǐ shēn qiān chǐ, [peach] [flower] [pool] [water] [deep] [thousand] [feet] The Peach Blossom Pool's waters are a thousand feet deep,

不及汪倫送我情。 bùjí Wānglún sòng wǒ qíng. [not] [reach] [Wang] [Lun] [see off] [me] [emotion] yet do not match Wang Lun's emotion as he sees his friend go.
