杜牧 贈別 其二 translation: Parting II, by Du Mu

This is a very rough translation and annotation of the poem 贈別 其二 (Zèng Bié), ‘Parting, II’, by the Tang Dynasty Chinese poet 杜牧 (Dù Mù).

Candle

贈別 其二 Zèng Bié [bestow] [parting] Parting, II

多情卻似總無情, Duōqíng què sì zǒng wúqíng, [much] [feeling] [yet] [seem] [overall] [not have] [feeling] Such emotion, yet in the end it seems there is no emotion;

唯覺樽前笑不成。 wéi jué zūnqián xiào bùchéng. [only] [feel] [goblet] [front] [smile] [not] [form] one only thinks behind one's goblet, unable to form a smile.

蠟燭有心還惜別, Làzhú yǒuxīn hái xībié, [candle][] [have] [heart] [still] [regret] [parting] The candle has heart, even it resents our parting -

替人垂淚到天明。 tì rén chuílèi dào tiānmíng. [substitute] [person] [hang] [tear] [to] [sky] [bright] in our place, it sheds tears till dawn.
