搜神記：北地雨肉 （No. 150）
This is a translation and annotation of text No. 150 in 搜神記 (Soushenji – ‘In Search of the Supernatural’), a collection of strange happenings compiled by 干寶 (Gan Bao) in the 4th century C.E.

北地雨肉

漢桓帝建和三年秋七月， [_Han_] [_Huan_] [emperor] [_Jian_] [_he_] [three] [year] [Autumn] [seven] [month] In the seventh month, in the Autumn of the third year of the Jianhe reign of Emperor Huan of Han,
北地廉雨肉， [north] [place] [_Lian_] [rain] [meat] In Lian county in Beidi Commandery it rained meat;
似羊肋，或大如手。 [seem] [sheep] [rib]，[some] [big] [as] [hand] it seemed like mutton shanks, and some were as big as hands.
是時梁太后攝政， [this] [time] [Liang] [empress dowager][] [regent][] At this time Empress Dowager Liang was regent,
梁冀專權， [_Liang_] [_Ji_] [concentrate] [power] and Liang Ji was accumulating power; _專權 is potentially a binome, which would make this line 'and Liangji was dictator'_
擅殺誅太尉李固、杜喬， [without authority] [kill] [execute] [high] [officer] [_Li_] [_Ku_]、[_Du_] [_Qiao_] without authority he executed the high officers Li Ku and Du Qiao,
天下冤之。 [heaven] [under] [injustice] [it] and the whole empire considered it an injustice.
