Vocabify 0.2.3

More updates to Vocabify, this time courtesy of Marc Jones. Marc has made numerous bug fixes and minor improvements, as well as implementing the following:

  • Now generates an image for each vocabulary item.
  • Includes launcher script.
  • Option to play sound with each notification.
  • Better error handling.

The main new feature is the image generation, which takes each vocab item and produces a temporary GIF image of it to display in the pop-up. It’s quite clever, putting characters on different lines to maximise use of the square space. Some screens:

[caption id="attachment_6031” align="aligncenter” caption="Showing one character: 信”][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_6032” align="aligncenter” caption="Showing two characters: 数量”][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_6033” align="aligncenter” caption="Showing three characters: 脸谱网”][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_6034” align="aligncenter” caption="Showing four characters: 奥林匹克”][/caption]

The images do look best with single characters, but they add a lot to any vocabulary items, especially using the Simkai font (which is bundled in the download now).

Download

If you’re on Linux and want to try Vocabify, you can download it from Google Code or from my server:

The file is 6.2Mb, the vast majority of which is the bundled Simkai font.

We are planning to get this working on other operating systems in future, but for now we’re just developing on Linux.
