My favourite Chinese character: 戀

Every time I read or write the character (liàn) I’m always struck by how aesthetically pleasing it is:

It’s the top half that I particularly like, which appears in as well. I just like the intricacy and neatness of it, and the way it’s very balanced but not quite symmetrical. It also contains the radical , which I find very pleasing to read and write as well.

And it has a good set of meanings: “to feel attached to; to long for; to love”, as in 談戀愛 (also a very good-looking word, I think).

Unfortunately the simplified version just isn’t as attractive:

I really think they ruined that one, it’s such a shame.
